“Chromesthesia: Si” – an audiovisual perfomance – took place within the “Sharpen Blue” exhibition opening.
Ukrainian composer Andrii Volyk performed an improvisation, that revealed the expressive capabilities of just one note.
According to the artist’s concept of the art perfomance, the musician had to remain solitary with his music. Without going beyond the hall or the acoustic-colour synesthesia, Andrii Volyk, using a single note as the basis, was placing the melodic core of improvisation in different harmonious contexts. And the viewer faced with a restriction on access to the musician’s personal space.
The perfomance, as well as the sharpen blue series, explores the human response to restraint. It is here not only for the artist, but also for the audience: the space of the music creation separated and preserved for the musician only.
Chromesthesia is a phenomenon, in which audible sounds automatically and involuntarily provoke the colour images. In the minds of many scholars of sonority and colour, Si note has strong associations with the shades of blue.
